Breathing
Space - Meditation in schools
Bodhi Tree offers a programme introducing
stilling exercises or meditation for the whole school. The meditations
are suitable for all whatever their faith background.
We teach simple meditations that
can be practised on a regular, ideally daily, basis in order
to raise the general level of awareness of self, others and
the wider environment.
Programme
objectives:
• to teach school pupils and teachers one or more simple meditations/stilling
exercises
• to teach teachers how to teach and lead through the practices
Why learn
to meditate at school?
Meditation is a means to become more aware and is a valuable
opportunity to be present in the here and now, which is both
refreshing and enjoyable. Children and adults alike benefit
from short periods of deliberate stillness and relative silence.
Regular short meditations
help children to:
- relax
- learn to focus their minds
- manage stress levels
- understand themselves better and
- get on better with the people around them.
‘Breathing space’ provides a pause
in the busy-ness of a school day and gives time to assimilate
experience and to prepare for whatever life brings next. Learning
to meditate along with fellow pupils and colleagues not only
benefits the individual, but can contribute to a more mindful
and friendly atmosphere in school.
